Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
